Dr. Gideon Muriuki

The Co-operative Bank of Kenya

Dr Muriuki was appointed Managing Director in 2001 with the express mandate to turn around the bank from the massive loss position of Shs 2.3 Billion that the bank had reported in year 2001. Dr. Muriuki has since driven a remarkable turnaround of the bank from the massive losses and a modest Asset Book of Shs 24 Billion in year 2001, to one of the most successful banks in the region with an Asset Base of over Kshs.750 Billion and a profit before tax of over Shs. 26.8 billion for the first nine months of 2024. The bank is now the leading Co-operative Bank in Africa with over 9 million account-holders with operations in Kenya and South Sudan.

Dr. Gideon Muriuki’s historic turnaround of Co-op Bank has earned accolades including; The Best Bank CEO in Africa in 2021 at the EMEA African Banking Awards, and ‘CEO of the Year – Africa 2014’ in the 2014 International Banker awards. Dr Muriuki has also received three honorary Doctorates from universities, and four presidential decorations by the presidents of Kenya and Burkina Fasso.
