Dr Ignacio Orce holds a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the Autonomous
University of Barcelona, a Higher Qualification in Cooperatives, and a Master’s
in Business Administration from EADA. He is currently the President and CEO of
Asistencia Sanitaria Colegial, a leading health insurance company. He also serves as
President of Autogestió Sanitària, a healthcare cooperative; the Montepío de
Previsión Social «Dr Luis Sans Solá», a friendly society; and the Spanish Association of Medical
Mutual Societies.
Building on the institutions founded and promoted by Dr Josep Espriu, a pioneer of healthcare cooperativism, Dr Orce has developed and strengthened the Assistència Group, a cooperative healthcare organisation in which both doctors and patients play a central role in co-management. Recognised globally as a benchmark in cooperative healthcare, the group is committed to delivering a self-sufficient, high-quality healthcare model.
Under his leadership, the group has implemented an internal oncology programme, developing and publishing clinical guidelines and protocols for the most prevalent cancers. Additionally, it has established and expanded specialised social welfare initiatives for doctors, currently benefiting approximately 1,100 medical professionals over the age of 70.
Throughout his career, Dr Orce has been dedicated to advancing and consolidating organisations that support the cooperative healthcare model. This approach ensures that doctors operate in optimal conditions, allowing them to enhance their individual practice while actively participating in the co-management of the healthcare system alongside patients.
Assistència Sanitària is a cooperative healthcare group that has been providing high-quality
medical care and health insurance in Barcelona for nearly 70 years. Its unique model integrates
both doctors and patients in governance through Autogestió Sanitària (a medical services
cooperative) and Scias (a consumer cooperative). This ensures a people-centred healthcare
approach that values both patients and professionals.
With over 200,000 insured members and an impressive 20-year average retention period, the
group is committed to quality care and fair working conditions for medical staff. At its core is
Hospital de Barcelona, a cooperative-run facility where patients participate in the governance.
Innovation drives Assistència Sanitària, offering specialised services such as telemedicine, sports
medicine, trauma care, senior care, fertility treatments, and advanced laboratory diagnostic
services.
Rooted in Dr Josep Espriu’s vision, the group continues to set a benchmark for cooperative,
patient-centred healthcare.
